The Serangoon House at a Glance

Designed by renowned interior designer Jacques Garcia, the Serangoon House leans confidently into a grand, old-world aesthetic inspired by Indian colonial architecture. Stepping into the lobby feels like traveling back in time, with elaborate porcelain chandeliers, marble mosaic flooring, and hand-painted wallpaper depicting lush scenes of colonial India. The dedication to detail continues throughout the property, where antiques, curated artwork, and thoughtful design moments reward a second look. In the guest rooms, custom-built, double-tiered canopy bunk beds offer a creative yet elegant solution for families and groups, comfortably accommodating up to four adults and two children. From the public spaces to the accommodations, there’s a clear through-line: detail, color, and a strong sense of place.

Every detail impresses, yet the hotel remains warm, inviting, and family-friendly. The service was the standout of my stay: the front desk team greeted me by name, responded promptly to every request, and made each interaction feel genuinely personal. Housekeeping and dining staff matched this level of attentiveness, ensuring every part of my stay was seamless. For a bustling city hotel, the care and thoughtfulness of the team truly stood out.

Design & Service

The rooms reflect the hotel’s signature style, blending bold design with thoughtful, practical touches. I stayed in a Royal Classic Queen with a city view. Though the most modest and compact option, the space felt cozy and cleverly laid out. At the heart of each room is a one-of-a-kind canopy bed, topped with an extra bunk—a playful, space-saving feature that makes the rooms especially appealing to families. During my stay, I spotted several multi-generational families enjoying the accommodations together.

The room included all the essentials for a comfortable stay: a large-screen TV, blackout curtains, desk with stool, mini-fridge, and complimentary tea, coffee, and bottled water. The marble bathroom, while compact, featured a spacious full shower. The mattress was firmer than I personally prefer but typical of many Asian hotels, and housekeeping kept the room spotless throughout my stay. The only minor quirk was a faint strange smell from the bathroom sink, which disappeared once the tap was running and never affected the stay.

Rooms

The hotel’s location is a major perk, placing you right in the heart of Singapore’s Little India. It sits directly across from the Mustafa Centre, a sprawling 24-hour shopping complex, and is also well positioned for exploring other neighborhoods. The Farrer Park MRT station is just a two-minute walk away, and the larger Jalan Besar MRT is less than 15 minutes on foot. The streets around the hotel are alive with lively restaurants, cafes, shops, mosques, and temples, and Grab taxis were always easy to catch whenever I needed one.

A practical tip: Sundays bring the neighborhood to life in full force, with crowds swelling in the evenings. To avoid the dense foot traffic, I recommend taking a taxi or rideshare rather than walking or using public transit during peak times.

Location

Onsite dining centers around GUPSHUP, the hotel’s signature restaurant serving inventive, premium Indian small plates. Its name, taken from the Hindi word for “conversation," sets the tone, inviting guests to slow down, chat, and savor the moment. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks, GUPSHUP aims aims to create a relaxed, social setting where meals feel as much about connection as cuisine.

Breakfast is served to order from an à la carte menu. For guests with breakfast included with their stay, they can choose a hot and cold beverage, a starter, a main, and a side, with options ranging from familiar Western comfort dishes like omelets and pancakes to Indian classics like steamed idli or aloo paratha. I loved starting my mornings by tasting new flavors, and everything I tried was fresh and delicious.

Instead of a traditional executive lounge, happy hour for unfolds at the GUPSHUP bar. Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members and above can select two beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) along with a snack. During my visit, I chose cocktails and a selection of Indian hors d’oeuvres, which offered yet another enjoyable way to sample local flavors in a relaxed setting.

For a quick pick-me-up between meals, GUPSHUP also operates a small café on the hotel’s outdoor patio. It’s a convenient place to grab chai or coffee ahead of a busy itinerary or to sit back and decompress after exploring.

While the Serangoon House does not have a pool, gym, or spa onsite, the staff is happy to point guests toward excellent offsite options, and the hotel’s central location makes that easy.

Dining & Amenities

As a Platinum Elite member, I felt genuinely recognized throughout my stay. At check-in, I was offered a choice of welcome amenity and opted for complimentary breakfast, which added real value. The evening happy hour perk was another thoughtful touch, and I appreciated the variety of options on the menu, including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. At other properties, I’ve arrived to find the lounge’s self-serve offerings picked over, so having attentive table service here was a welcomed difference. Being able to sample hors d’oeuvres from the restaurant’s menu was a particular highlight, far surpassing the usual lounge fare of fruit, pastries, and simple snacks. My trip was for leisure, so the absence of a formal lounge or business center was not an issue for me, but business travelers might find it less convenient. Overall for a Tribute Portfolio property, the elite benefits here felt generous and elevated the overall experience, especially given the hotel’s approachable price point.
